Fall Mixer Fun

On Saturday, September 30th, the CMMS held our Fall Event. The day started with a trip to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, where participants were encouraged to collect items for the microscopy demonstration. True to form, there was a moment when we all found ourselves scanning the ground for samples instead of paying attention to the display of exotic and beautiful birds within feet of us. Once everyone had seen exhibits at the zoo, we headed over to the new Materials Characterization and Processing center at Johns Hopkins. This state-of-the-art facility has a dazzling hallway array of instruments and custom-designed rooms, complete with responsive lighting, to enable cutting-edge science. After a tour of the labs, participants enjoyed pizza, and a demonstration of the Phenom table-top SEM and Dino Lite portable microscope. The day was rounded off with some liquid nitrogen ice cream, skillfully made by some of our younger microscopists!
