Cathodoluminescence image of a chondrule from a primitive meteorite. Chondrules are small melt droplets consisting of silicate minerals such as olivine and pyroxene (pink grains), along with glass (green-blue material between the pink grains). The presence of chondrules tells us that this is a primitive meteorite – one that came from an asteroid that formed around 4.5 billion years ago, and has remained unmelted ever since. Cathodoluminescence images such as this one can provide information on the trace elements present in the sample, which in turn provides information about conditions in the early solar system.
